Bergerac
This is the largest Appellation of the South-West region - Bergerac is located just East of Bordeaux on the Dordogne river. Many battles of the Hundred Years’ war were fought here along the hills above the Dordogne Valley. The vineyards are planted along the hills that girdle the little city of Bergerac, especially on the right bank of the river, called the “Cote Nord”. The soil ranges from sandy gravel to flinty clay and ends in a chalky clay with traces of iron.
Bergerac wines are made with standard staple grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot (reds), Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc (whites), sometimes mixed with less common local grapes in order to produce unique flavours and textures.
