Maconnais
The Maconnais area at the south end of the Burgundy region is best known for good value white Chardonnay – the village named Chardonnay is in the north of this region. There are plantings of Pinot Noir and Gamay, which are made into reds and roses, but the big majority of wine production is white. Pouilly-Fuisse is one of the best known, along with its two junior partners – Pouilly-Loche and Pouilly-Vinzelles. Macon is the basic appellation, used for reds, whites and roses. Macon-Villages covers whites only.
