What is En Primeur?
En Primeur is a foreign term to some, but it essentially means ‘wine futures’. This is a practice which is most common in Bordeaux, where where wine is bought while it’s still in the barrel and shipped to its destination when bottled 2-3 years later.
Wines are offererd exclusive of duty, excise, freight and GST which is paid once the wines arrive in the country. However you aren’t going in blind, all the cask samples are tasted and assessed by most of the worlds wine journalists and critics, these assessments are readily available.
The whole idea around En Primeur is that by purchasing and paying in advance of bottling, the buyer gets a significant discount on retail price. It’s a win-win situation for the consumer who gets a great price and the producer who gets paid in advance.
The whole concept has become increasingly popular over that past few decades - specifically for the classed growths in Bordeaux.
